This 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters take place in a fog of civil war, where the English and Welsh were raiding each other’s borders and supporting one or another claimant to the English throne: Empress Maud or King Stephen. In spite of the ongoing violence, the author suffuses her novels with a deep sense of peace and contentment in the monastic life. A monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael, the ex-Crusader-turned herbalist is her solver of murders and mysteries of the heart. Ellis weaves a rich tapestry of his daily life on the war-torn Welsh border.

This fifth novel in a series of 21 mysteries, "The Leper of St. Giles," begins in October of 1139 with the makings of a good old-fashioned melodrama: a beautiful young heiress who is being forced into marriage with a wicked sixty-year-old baron. The baron demonstrates his caddishness by striking a leper with his whip as the wedding party passes Saint Giles, the abbey's lazar house.

Now the bride-to-be is secretly in love with one of the bad baron's squires, and he returns her love. Both wedding parties are staying at the abbey, and two nights before the wedding, Brother Cadfael interrupts an assignation between the young lovers in his workshop. He sympathizes with them, especially when the bride's guardian bursts in and drags her young charge off. The next morning, the wicked baron accuses his lovelorn squire of theft, and the youngster escapes imprisonment by plunging into the Severn river.

Cadfael must somehow reunite the young lovers, even after murder rears its ugly head. This is one of my favorite books in this memorable series. Two strong characters are introduced, one of whom will pop up several times further into the series: the mysterious leper, Lazarus and the bad baron's mistress, Avice of Thornbury.

I am sure that if you've read this far into the Brother Cadfael mysteries, you will want to continue to the end. It will be a very satisfying and worthwhile journey.

As always Peters has created fascinating g characters. I love the flowing, descriptive language. Plotting is superb and always satisfying with the twists. Unexpected murderers.
I read the series 20 years ago. I remember some characters, but delighted to not remember all the stories. They are new again.
Cadfael remains one of my favorite fictional characters.
Ellis Peters does and excellent job of keeping the reader guessing as to is the guilty party in all of his twenty Cadfael stories. He is a good writer and knows eleventh century culture and history of life on the Welsh -England border. I highly recommend all of his Chronicles of Brother Cadfael books. The books are also of reasonable cost.
Cadfael has no faults in my eyes - after all, he's Welsh - and any story he inhabits is a favorite. Ms. Peters' medieval scholarship keeps the atmosphere believable and her exposition of a very little known period in English history is quite sharp and sympathetic. There's no such thing as too much Cadfael.
A solid Cadfael story, in which Cadfael must sort it all out without the help of Hugh Berringar.

There's a bit of telegraphing, and this one didn't grip me in the same way some of the others in this series do. Not sure why, but I usually don't have to be "in the mood" to read Cadfael and this time I sometimes did (not for all sections though). Odd.

For all that a good story with believable characters you will invest in.

Many mysteries revolve around a murder or two and this book is no exception. The who, how and why was pretty easy to figure out was the reason for only giving it a 3 rating. There are little details to sort out at the end which Peters does well. In other words, the book is not difficult or challenging. Rather it sweet and charming, if those words can be applied to monks and murder.
Consistently entertaining, although not one of his best. The plot was a little predictable. The settings are always very vivid; a perspective of life in the Middle Ages. Life was hard, but good people endure. Wonderful characters.
I really enjoyed this mystery. Ellis Peters has a way of portraying one character as the obvious suspect. Then, Brother Cadfael steps in, or in this case, another character, to reveal the actual perpetrator. This is the fifth book in the series I've read and I suspected who the murderer was before it was revealed. I'm getting better at picking up on her clues. The second reveal was a surprise. I hope it is for you as well.

The story takes place mainly at the Abby, but there are a few side trips to the countryside, and even one down south to Godric's Ford. Abbot Radulfus has a greater role and it is good to see him grow as a character.

I know I didn't say much about the storyline, it is a mystery after all, and I don't want to spoil it for you. I hope you enjoy the Leper of Saint Giles as I did.
