Book Two of the Sleepy Hollow trilogy is one of the scariest books I've ever read. Hands down. Like a scary movie, I wanted to close my eyes at the scary parts - unlike a movie which continues if a watcher covers their eyes, a book does not continue without a reader. I truly think there were parts where I literally didn't breathe. Scared to death, I would breathe only if I lifted my eyes, which I rarely did. I LOVED THIS BOOK. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!! I do wonder if the writing was hard as it was so scary leaving the author with nightmares, or did the editing leave the horror behind.

Rise Headless and Ride was a great novel in and of itself. Bridge of Bones is everything Headless was, and also everything it wasn't. The second book has all the humor, suspense, and captivating historical research that made the first book so entertaining; and what's more, I felt much more connected to the characters than before. They've all been fleshed out and developed, making them relatable and real to the reader.

I'm eagerly looking forward to the last book in the trilogy. This is truly a fantastic, gripping read, better in fact than many of the popular, film-adapted young adult series around today. You can really tell how much thought Gleaves has put into the development of his characters, the story, and the dramatic and detailed history, both real and fictional, of the origins of Sleepy Hollow. The result is a seamless and brilliant story that piques your interest, whether you're fascinated by the headless horseman tale or not. Unique, enticing, intelligent, fun, suspenseful, and delightfully crafted.
Damn you Richard for leaving me hanging! But hey, at least I put off until Halloween season again to read the next in the Crane series so I don't have long to wait for the follow-up.
One nice feature is being acquainted with the author online and being aware of his works even before the Crane books, I was able to know some of the things behind the making of the book. I've had fun, for example, looking up many of the landmarks on various map sights, the myths on wikis and other facts in the history books. It's fascinating to see how Richard is able to take real legends, facts and American mythos and weave them into a modern tale.
While there are some things I ran into as I went along that made me think "why didn't he have x-character do this?", I was generally rewarded a few chapters or pages later with either them getting around to doing just what I was thinking, and/or explaining why they hadn't at first. There were also a few things subtly foreshadowed, leaving just enough details for readers to figure out some things for themselves, to be awarded later by finding out they were correct.
I can't wait for the next installment to come out and think I can already foresee potential for more adventures once the Sleepy Hollow saga is complete. (After all, there's Salem, MA still yet to explore!)
I've been in a funk lately in that anything I start reading I give up about 3 chapters in. Nothing has been able to hold my interest. That is why I am patiently awaiting the third book in this series as I know it is going to be fantastic! I stumbled upon the first book last October while trying to find something spooky to get me in the Halloween spirit. And boy did it. I am pretty sure I read it in one weekend, and was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was there a second book already out but a third was to be coming soon! Love these characters and the history woven into this page turner. Can't wait to see what book three brings!
This is a great story of adventure, supernatural myths, and teenage love all rolled into a scary tale. It's a fleshed out version of Washington Irving's Sleepy Hollow that left me wanting the next book right now!! I read the first book, ordered this one, and read it straight through too. I love it that there is very little foul language, coarse dialog, or vulgarity!! The nastiness is nasty...(one awful teenage prank)... yes, but not overly disgusting. The violence that does take place is a necessary part of the Horseman's tale and is explained in a way that doesn't leave a person thinking violence or bullying is normal. Evil is evil. Good is good. This author lets us know that this is so. I am anxiously awaiting the next segment of this series!!!! As for this author's writing, it is great! I only spotted one grammatical error in either of the two books, and that's awesome for an indie!
I can count on one hand the number of horror novels I've read, and it only takes 2 fingers to count the ones I've read twice Rise Headless & Rise, and Bridge of Bones. I like Gleaves' main characters very much, and I'm fascinated by the way they think and act - the twist of sensible people dealing with supernatural phenomena. It reminds me of the way Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter dealt with their worlds. Not that this is just character study Gleaves also tells a well-plotted, gripping story, with great atmosphere. For example "The Burying Ground lurked behind, full of tilted cenotaphs and baby stones and frightened angel faces. Snow fell through the early evening starlight and collected on the twiggy branches of the locust trees. It blanketed the graves and quieted them. The Burying Ground had lost its spookiness. It was half-creepy and half-festive now, like a Stephen King novel illustrated by Currier and Ives." Highly recommended.
