Just when you think you've uncovered all the good urban fantasy writers out there, another one comes along. Ms. McLeod has indeed come along! She is an English writer with an English publisher who has crafted an unusual offering for the urban fantasy world. The heroine, Genny, is half fae and half vampire, working for a company known as Spellcrackers owned and operated by witches. Witches don't like vampires and vampires don't like witches. In fact, they hate each other. If Genny's bosses were to discover her half-vampire heritage, they'd have her roasted, toasted, and out on the street in a heartbeat.
Genny is a spellcracker, a really good one. This means that she can ferret out spells cast by witches. She can also destroy spells. She is so good with this skill that she is hired to solve the murder of a vampire's fiance, against her own wishes. The vampire has been jailed for killing his fiancee. His father, a human who believes in his son's innocence, wants to know if magic (a spell) was used for the killing and he hires a reluctant Genny to find out. Genny's investigation brings her into close contact with the underbelly of the vampire community and this results in the reawakening of suppressed memories from her childhood. The author carefully weaves Genny's history into the unfolding storyline and the characters involved in the vampire world.
There is a lot of violence and sex in the book. Interestingly enough, though, Jenny is celibate in spite of being pursued by a morally ambiguous half-man, half-goat (descendant of Pan) and at least two majorly bad vampires.
The characters in the Sweet Scent of Blood are neither purely bad nor purely good, including the main character. They are fascinating, though. Everyone sells each other out, making it more difficult to follow the threads of the murder and find the murderer. This is a complex story beautifully told and executed. Each character is real and multi-dimensional. The world is imaginative and numerous subplots are built off the main plot. The writing is superb.
Initially, Amazon listed Ms. McLeod's books, but they were available only through Amazon's second tier sellers at astronomical prices. Being published by an English publisher may make it difficult to find Ms. McLeod's books at a reasonable price. If they aren't available directly from Amazon, give Abe Books a try. Her books there are available at far less expense than the array of sellers on the Amazon site.

Genevieve Taylor is a sidhe with a secret, she's also half vamp. But it's her heritage and her family secret that she's been trying to hide all this time. When the vamps come to Spellcrackers with a special request, Genny is assigned the case. It seems a local celebrity vamp has been accused of killing his girlfriend. That alone is not enough for Spellcrackers to step in, nevermind the fact that the witches and the vamps hate each other! No, the vamps suspect that magic is behind the killing and they want Genny to sniff out the spell, even though the local cops say no evidence of magic can be found. And this is when Genny really gets herself in trouble, aggravating local authorities, vamps, and the other "others" around her and landing her in a heap of trouble.
I have to admit I felt a little lost throughout this book. I kind of felt like I'd jumped into the middle of a series rather than the first installment. There's so much backstory, and so much that is obviously left to be revealed throughout the series, but I felt like I was missing something. On the other hand, I thought McLeod's world-building was original and interesting. The mix of characters is fun and I'd like to see if some of the kinks are ironed out in book two.
I was initially attracted to this story because it has a sidhe protagonist, which is starting to pop up more in urban fantasies but is still pretty uncommon. And, this is an urban fantasy, not a para romance in disguise (I do like para romance, but prefer UF). The book started off well enough. Genny is the only Sidhe Fae living in London, working for an agency that gets rid of troublesome magic for the general public. She's approached to investigate the death of a woman believed to be killed by vampire calendar boy, Mr. October. Only, Genny hates vampire. And her witch superiors have rules against any involvement with said bloodsuckers. From this point the book went, well, not downhill, more like nowhere very slowly.
The rest of the book is a series of confrontations between Genny and big bad vampire #1, or big bad vampire #2, etc. All more powerful than her, and all very, very attractive due to the vampire venom in her blood. She acts almost like a junkie around any powerful vamps. Yet she gets away each time. I think this was supposed to be suspenseful; it was annoying. The author does spend some time world-building. The magic system is interesting, with precious gems playing a pivotal role, and I like the more menacing vampires. Pretty to look at but they really just want to hunt and kill. We also have trolls, goblins and more. It's a good mix, with a lot of potential. I think my main issue here was a lack of urgency. Halfway through I put the book down for several days to do other things because I just didn't care. Genny is the only fully developed character, and we do get hints and some surprises about her throughout, but it didn't make up for a mediocre plot with poor pacing.
Overall, I think this series has potential. I ordered the first three books, so I'll probably at least give "the Cold Kiss of Death" a try at some point. Recommended to urban fantasy fans looking for more witches, but be prepared to have some patience.
