Forgive this review's suckiness. I'm a writer but for some reason I can't write reviews. This book is the most wonderful love story I've ever read! It completely destroys me and renews me when I read it. I will spend the rest of my days trying to write a novel even half as good. It makes me want to claw my heart from my chest but in a good way. There will never be another book this wonderful to me,I'm nearly certain of that. Domenico is so glorious and petulant and violent and tender that he is absolutely the best hero I've ever read. Reading this for the second time and its just as wonderful. I find myself parceling it out so that it won't end, like someone at a feast that is so tiny but each bite brings them closer to an empty plate. Please read this book as it will profoundly change your life possibly as it did mine.Tags : The Silver Devil [Teresa Denys] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have to weigh in as a voice in the wilderness of this one.
This book has very little to recommend it. In addition to featuring a sadistic "hero", the writer also "treated" the viewer to a helpless, doll-like heroine as victim personified.
Besides being beautiful and unable to leave, what was it that held these two together? I did not like the fact that the heroine was inferior to the hero in almost every possible way. The girl could not even read.
The hero basically found a beautiful blank slate and painted the picture of his ideal woman.
The feminist in me screamed out against the total submission of the heroine and the unrestrained dominance of the hero.
IMHO, a relationship is not really a relationship when one party has complete control over the other and one partner has no other options.
Felicia, it appeared, was very much in fear of Domenico-and with good reason. He was mercurial and demonstrated to her early and througout their realtionship that his good will was arbitrary and, if lost, could result in dire consequences.
I know this book is very popular and will continue to be, but I, for one, found it more disturbing than interesting.
Love this book.
Wow,I have NEVER read a novel like this one. I enjoyed the characters because they did not make excuses of who they were, especially the hero. He was quite unique and unforgettable!
Not only is this not your average romance, it takes the bodice ripper to a whole new level. I should have been horrified with the violence, the cruelty of the Duke, but like everyone in this novel, you can't help but be drawn to him. Poster child for ruthless Machiavellian kingship of the Renaissance, he makes Ceaser Borgia look like a rookie. Denys has a wonderful way of writing that draws you in from the first sentence. Gone is your world, you can see and taste the smokey atmosphere of a Italian tavern. Modern sensibilities evaporate with the glittering costumes and never ending betrayal of the Medici like court. Loved this book, and I have read it many times over. It never ceases to capture me and hold me until the end.
Since I bought this last year, this has become my favorite historical romance. This is THE bodice-ripper that will make all others you read seem boring! This novel has plot twists, sultry courtiers, historical fashion, betrayals, and an ending that will leave you shocked. This isn't your typical romance when good triumphs over bad just because that's how you want it, know what you're getting into. This is the book to invest in. If you can find it on your own, congrats---you've just found a treasure.
Felicia lived A hard life with her half brother until the duke of Cabria saw her threw A window and buys her from her brother. Life for her changes for better and for worst being A mistress to the unpredictable and troubled duke. She is afraid of Domenico's vicious ways but still finds herself falling in love with the sinfully handsome leader of Cabria.
This book was the first romance novel I ever read and enjoyed in which the hero was truly unlikable. He did many disturbing things that was really unforgivable and there were times when he did such horrible things that I thought that I would give this book one star. He was a leader which had no qualms about killing whom ever stood in his way, even if they were innocent, but somehow Teresa Denys still found A way to make me forget while she drew me into the book yearning for A happy ever after for the hero and heroine.
My advice would be to go into this book with an open mind. In our history there truly were women that fell in love with cruel leaders and it was refreshing to see A realistic viewpoint on A relationship of this caliber. Sometimes you might ask yourself what Felicia saw in Domenico but just remember that we all know someone who loves A jerk.
This story was told in the first person which was A refreshing change. The love scenes aren't detailed but this book has it's own special qualities that will keep you glued to the pages.
