A one sitting book? Absolutely! This was a fun and adventurous story. It felt quick moving, and I really liked the main character Cal. He's a young 20ish man, and his attitude, thoughts, and behaviour supported this. He's not quite alpha, very snarky, and an genuine nice guy. A great hero character, and one that I can't wait to see develop and grow in future books.
The premise of the series is fairly straight forward, with Cal being a member of "special" police division that deals with supernatural stuff. I like the world set up with the Eververse. It's simple, yet offers a multitude of possibilities.
The action was fun, and in the realm of believable, which made for an enjoyable story. There is plenty of humour and snark, just how I like my paranormal stories. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!

Soul Breaker City of Crows Book 1 edition by Clara Coulson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I seriously did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did, so it really was an awesome surprise. Cal, while 22 and ready to be a hero, is also self aware and willing to be inspired by those around him, including several badass women. (Women who were martially badass without reading like men-with-tits characters). He's inconsequentially bi-sexual, meaning it's no big thing or in need of explaining. He's bi, just like he's brunette, no need for further drama about it (this isn't a romance, after all). He shows emotion, including grief and tears and then gets up and does his job.
Of the side characters you have several powerful women, who aren't using sex to get ahead. A 40+ year old women still allowed to be sexy, have sex and enjoy it, (So often 'older' women' seem to have lost this aspect of themselves in literature.), man in authority who is grieving and showing physical pain but still functioning, an academic who is basically saving the day with research and being appreciated, and racial and sexual diversity.
All in all, I really liked this and look forward to more. I did think Cal made a couple leaps of logic that were a little too keen to follow and despite saying he's scared and such, he was a tad close to Marty Stew perfection (but not too close). I'll be looking for more books by Clara Coulson.
This was a fascinating introduction to a new urban fantasy series. I found Cal to be an interesting character who was immediately relatable.
One thing that I didn't quite understand was the title... Who/what exactly was the soul breaker? I was hoping that it would be some kind of reference to Cal and some undiscovered power he has, but that didn't happen. Charun certainly did a lot of breaking, but I never got the impression that he did anything beyond killing the physical bodies of his victims. Tuchulchan consumed the life force of his hosts, but I didn't think that he was enough of a major character to define the story itself.
Despite my curiosity about the source of the title, I loved reading about Cal's adventures starting out with the DSI and I have already purchased not only this book, but the next two as well.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
For some reason I’m entertained as well as annoyed by these stories. (I’ve read 1-4). The ideas are interesting, and the author does a good job of bringing them out. I like the characters. What is annoying is how much Cal manages to get hurt, and get others hurt, because he doesn’t think or react like a trained agent. It makes me crazy. I told my sister he was a walking train wreck.
It’s unfortunate that these books aren’t available to read thru kindle unlimited. I received the first one free, and while I enjoyed it, it wasn’t good enough to pay for the rest. The only reason I’ve ended up reading them is because I could borrow them from my sister.
I gave the first three stories three stars. I couldn’t rate them higher because there were a number of spots that seemed like filler, and they dragged the pace of the stories down. I could skim those spots and not miss anything. Book four was a bit more interesting, but it ended with too many things left up in the air. It’s not what I would really consider a cliffhanger, but it was enough like one that it annoyed me.
Soul Breaker is another well-written indie book that if you like urban fantasy warrants your time and money. It sometimes gets pretty graphic but not enough to turn me off the book.
The plot involves a Detective of the supernatural, Cal Kinsey. He’s new on the job but that doesn’t stop him from taking a major role in the investigation of some horrific murders. I love it when urban fantasy gets away from vampires and werewolves, and this one does. The criminal in this case comes from Etruscan myth, an area that is completely new to me, thus making this delightfully unique. The author skilfully portraits the power of these mythical characters with clear and evocative prose.
The pacing is excellent. It never lagged and never obstructed character development. The characters were well-developed, realistic and easy to relate to.
What I really love about this book is how once our hero gets to actually talk to the ‘bad guys’, we see that they are, in fact, noble beings defending their sacred objects within the laws of their land—the Eververse. The Eververse isn’t our realm though, and when they break through the veil between the worlds, humans are in serious trouble.
I also love anything that involves different realms—such stories can be called transrealist, like my own book Worlds Within Worlds.
A well-deserved 5 stars.
